The Difference Between PaaS, SaaS, and Hosting

PaaS stands for Platform as a Service

PaaS provides development tools and foundation to build and host online applications. This is an infrastructure used by developers to build applications running in the Cloud. Typical PaaS examples are Amazon Web Services and Google App Engine. Typical use-case is a start-up company building a mobile app that connects remotely to the backend built with PaaS APIs and hosted by PaaS provider.

SaaS stands for Software as a Service

SaaS is referring to a set of applications hosted remotely and available online to the end-users and businesses. Typical example is SalesForce and even though their slogan says No Software - they do develop and host software. The idea is that the end-user does not have to install and provision any software in house but rather use it online.

Hosting typically means providing paid access to the isolated area on a shared system or a dedicated virtual server running on the hardware maintained and managed by the service provider. For example, GoDaddy is a typical hosting company.
